Focus Albertinum: By the Open Sea

Nordic seascapes of the 19th Century

The cabinet exhibition presents seven seascapes by Andreas Achenbach, Eugène Dücker and the two Norwegians Christian Krohg and Adelsteen Normann. A large number of maritime landscapes from the Düsseldorf school of painting came to the Dresden Picture Gallery in the 1880s. The most important reason for this was probably a directorial preference: Karl Woermann (1844-1933), an art historian from a Hamburg shipping family who had previously taught in Düsseldorf, had been director of the museum since October 1882. His passion for the sea was probably a direct motive for purchasing such paintings.

Text

Although there are also examples by older masters, most of the works are by contemporary painters, such as Andreas Achenbach or the two modernist Norwegians Adelsteen Normann and Christian Krohg. Two seascapes by the Baltic German landscape painter Eugène Dücker (1841-1916) were purchased: “On the Baltic Sea Beach” in 1883 and “Sunrise on the Beach of Rügen”, painted a year earlier in 1888.

Two seascapes by the Baltic German landscape painter Eugène Dücker (1841-1916) were purchased: “On the Baltic Sea Beach” in 1883 and “Sunrise on the Beach of Rügen”, painted a year earlier in 1888. The latter painting was lost during the war for decades. However, the painting was identified by the Cologne auction house Lempertz in the fall of 2024. Thanks to the commitment and cooperation of the auction house and the consignors, the work was returned after 80 years. To mark the occasion, the Albertinum is showing seven seascapes from the collection.
