Paula Modersohn-Becker and Edvard Munch. The Big Questions of Life

Focusing on the ‘big questions of life,’ works by Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876–1907) and Edvard Munch (1863–1944) are being shown in dialogue for the first time. The exhibition marks the 150th birthday of Paula Modersohn- Becker, who was born in Dresden. In their now world-famous paintings, both artists reflected on fundamental questions of life. Becoming, being, and perishing – life, love, and death – were press ing themes in philosophy and art around 1900. The concept of ‘life’ was omnipresent, standing for naturalness and youth, and opposing convention and stagnation.

Der Begriff “Leben”

The exhibition at the Albertinum features numerous major works by Edvard Munch, in which he processed personal emotions with a directness that was seen as provocative at the time. His primary motifs include interactions between the sexes, sickness, and loss, as well as life-affirming depictions of nature and poignant portraits of children. At almost the same time, Paula Modersohn-Becker developed a style that was equally distinctive and innovative. The simplicity of form in her work signifies the dignity of the human person. On display are key works by the artist that touch on childhood, motherhood, and old age, as well as a love of nature and the spirituality of things.

Das Albertinum

To a greater extent than others, Modersohn-Becker and Munch found artistic answers to the urgent questions of their turbulent times. That is why their works remain relevant today. The exhibition presents over 150 paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, including numerous loans from international museums. It is accompanied by hands-on activities, discussions about art, and a film series.
