Focus Albertinum: Restoration / Romanticism
The cabinet exhibition focuses on the restoration of paintings and their decorative frames from the first half of the 19th century. Many of the works on display from the Albertinum’s collection were conserved and restored in preparation for special exhibitions so that they could be presented to the public again after often decades of custody in the depot.

The selection includes portraits by Joseph Karl Stieler, Moritz Retzsch, and Johann Carl Baehr; landscapes by Carl Friedrich Lessing, Carl Christian Sparmann, and Robert Kummer; and history paintings by Friedrich Matthäi, Woldemar Hottenroth, and Ferdinand Hartmann. These works vividly illustrate the diverse challenges of restoration.
The measures included, among other things, repairing cracks in the canvasses, removing aged varnishes and older retouching, and restoring missing ornamental elements and mountings on richly decorated frames. The work was carried out by conservators from the painting conservation workshop of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister and the Albertinum, in collaboration with freelance colleagues. The exhibition thus offers a rare glimpse into conservation practice and demonstrates how careful conservation and restoration contribute to the preservation of significant works of art.
