Focus Albertinum: Italy in colour
Late 19th-century landscape paintings in the Albertinum
Italy’s landscapes have long been regarded as sources of inspiration, strength and longing for artists from the North. In the late 19th century, however, depictions of nature were no longer confined to idyllic or heroic interpretations. Zwischen
There seems to be a world of difference between the evocative late Romanticism of Albert Rieger and the radical Realism of Adolph Menzel, and yet their paintings occupy an equal place in the great panorama of painting. At that time, painting still had one decisive advantage over the emerging art of photography: it alone showed the public of that time – with a fascinating wealth of nuances – Italy in colour.
