Ernst Barlach on the 150th Anniversary of his Birth

Without a doubt, Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) enjoys a popularity matched by few other 20th-century artists in Germany. His importance as a sculptor is due primarily to his wood sculptures. At the same time, however, this versatile artist also worked in various other media: as well as producing drawings and prints, Barlach was the author of numerous plays and prose works, and an expressive letter writer.

The exhibition, which is a joint project with the Ernst Barlach Haus - Hermann F. Reemtsma Foundation Hamburg in association with the Ernst Barlach Foundation Güstrow, focuses particularly on Barlach’s sketchbooks, drawings and wood sculptures, whilst also highlighting all the other facets of his extensive oeuvre. Attention is also paid in the exhibition to Barlach’s student days in Dresden and his early works, his subsequent career illustrated by important works and groups of works, his disparagement as “degenerate” during the Nazi period, as well as his reception and the high esteem in which he was held in both German states after 1945. This first comprehensive retrospective of this exceptional artist, for whom art was “a thing of profoundest humanity”, is being held in Dresden to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Freezing Girl

The wooden sculpture Freezing Girl from 1917 from the Ernst Barlach Haus in Hamburg, which is represented in the presentation, has a special historical connection to the SKD. It was acquired in 1920 for the Skulpturensammlung in the Albertinum and in 1937 was one of the very works confiscated by the National Socialists. For the first time after more than 80 years, it finds its way back to Dresden as a loan.
