[Translate to English:] Ernst Barlach zum 150. Geburtstag: Eine Retrospektive
The exhibition, which is a joint project with the Ernst Barlach Haus - Hermann F. Reemtsma Foundation Hamburg in association with the Ernst Barlach Foundation Güstrow, focuses particularly on Barlach’s sketchbooks, drawings and wood sculptures, whilst also highlighting all the other facets of his extensive oeuvre. Attention is also paid in the exhibition to Barlach’s student days in Dresden and his early works, his subsequent career illustrated by important works and groups of works, his disparagement as “degenerate” during the Nazi period, as well as his reception and the high esteem in which he was held in both German states after 1945. This first comprehensive retrospective of this exceptional artist, for whom art was “a thing of profoundest humanity”, is being held in Dresden to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth.
