This commission acquired artistic importance for the photographer and led him to an intense engagement with the relationship between his own medium and sculpture. The concept of “abstraction,” in the sense of an inner and outer distance from the object, was central for him. Christian Borchert’s little-known photos are being publicly exhibited for the first time in almost thirty years, alongside some of Georg Kolbe’s works from the collection of the Albertinum.
