Life Letters – Participatory Programme

From 8th February 2026 the museum Albertinum will present the exhibition “Paula Modersohn-Becker and Edvard Munch. The Big Questions of Life”.

Paula Modersohn-Becker was born on 8 February 1876 in Dresden, Edvard Munch on 12 December 1863 in Norway. Both artists were seismographs of their time and generation. Their works come together in the Albertinum, revolving around such fundamental, major themes as birth and childhood, illness and death, love, loneliness and age, the joy of life, fears of life and closeness to nature.

We need your support for this exhibition! We are looking for interested people who would like to write texts that deal with the artworks of Paula Modersohn-Becker, Edvard Munch and the important themes of life.

The time in which Paula Modersohn-Becker and Edvard Munch lived was characterised by a multitude of changes. New technologies were introduced, many people began working in factories and the ever-faster developments unsettled everyday life. The world as they experienced and perceived it is visible in the art of Modersohn-Becker and Munch. With themes like life, nature, pain and death they move us even over one hundred years later. The questions they were faced with in their youth are just as relevant today.

We would like to discuss these topics with our guests as part of the exhibition!
